On May 29 – June 2, the tenth International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM) Congress took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In accordance with the theme of “Embracing and Empowering Rehabilitation Medicine: from Knowledge to Practice,” innovative scientific sessions were presented by experts from the field to share their knowledge and experience. Passionate about community based rehabilitation and program development, Fengyi Kuo, one of our occupational therapists, was invited to speak at the Congress. Her two studies, entitled “Stop Taking on Pounds (STOP): A Pediatric Weight Management Program for Underserved, At-Risk Minority Children” and “Social Participation in Community-Dwelling Older Adults through the Lifestyle Redesign Program®”, both focus on health promotion and community based program development and evaluation were scheduled as oral presentations. Another community-based rehabilitation project for minority youth, “Life Skills Training for Adolescents Resettled in the United States from Southeast Asia” was scheduled as a poster presentation. All three presentations were well received.

 


LIH Healthcare Hosts Pre-Conference Workshops at ISPRMDC

The International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine for Developing Countries (ISPRMDC) held its third annual conference from July 28 – 31 in Kunming, China. This year, the conference featured a special pre-conference workshop series hosted by LIH Healthcare, conference corporate sponsor. The workshop series was led by a group of internationally renowned rehabilitation experts, who are also members of LIH Healthcare’s Consultant Advisory Board. They discussed 3 trending rehabilitation topics, “Spasticity Management,” “Cardiac Rehabilitation,” and “Motor Control and Learning.” The workshops introduced cutting-edge concepts and included on-site demonstration with the most advanced technology in the field. Focusing on enhancing awareness on how to promote patients’ functional ability and quality of life, the workshop series gained attention from international and local rehabilitation communities.

Audience ISPRMDCThe first workshop, Spasticity Management, was led by Dr. Gerard Francisco and Dr. Heakyung Kim. Both are well known rehabilitation professionals. Two breakout sessions included “Contemporary Strategies for Post-Stroke Spasticity Management” and “Strategies of Spasticity Control in Cerebral Palsy Children.” Dr. Francisco is the current Director of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Chief Medical Officer of TIRR Memorial Hermann. He is also a clinical professor and Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Medical School. Dr. Kim is the Fellowship Program Director of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine and Director of Pediatric Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Medicine at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City; she also serves as A. David Gurewitsch Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine and Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia University Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medical Center.

”Cardiac Rehabilitation” workshop sessions were led by Dr. Matthew Bartels and Professor Alice Jones, also two very renown rehabilitation experts. The two breakout sessions included “Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine Physician in Cardiac Rehabilitation: Restoration of Function and Health” and “The role of a Physiotherapist in Cardiac Rehabilitation.” Dr. Bartels is the current Chairman of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He has also been prominently engaged in the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Association of Academic Physiatrists, Association of American Physicians, and the International Society for Heart & Lung Transplantation. Professor Jones is an international expert in cardiorespiratory physical therapy; she is currently an Honorary Professor at the University of Sydney.

The “Motor Control and Learning” workshop session was led by Professor Fengyi Kuo and Therapist Ching-Chun Lin. The session was rolled out with a deep dive from theoretical lecture to practical experience. Professor Kuo is currently an occupational therapy clinician at LIH Olivia’s Place, Shanghai, and a visiting professor at Indiana University/IU School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences in Indianpolis, Indiana, United States. She also serves on the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA)’s Childhood Obesity Prevention and Health Promotion Work Group. Ching-Chun Lin is an experienced physical therapist with extensive clinical and research experience in neurology, pediatrics, orthopedics, geriatrics, and neurocognitive fields. She has previously served as Physical Therapist Lead of the Rehabilitation Medicine Department at Zhonghe Memorial Hospital of Kaohsiung Medical School.

Nelson Chow & Shawn Yang Featured on CCTV’s “Crossover”

Crossover is a CCTV cross-cultural lifestyle English-language talk show that celebrates and explores life in China. Hosts discuss the most exciting issues of the day. Hot topics in news that feature the best experts in their field, celebrity interviews, and general entertainment are all part of Crossover.

Shawn Yang, a member of the LIH Healthcare communications team, was invited to “Crossover” on 23 March 2016. Shawn was diagnosed with progressive muscular dystrophy when he was eight years old and was not given an optimistic prognosis for his future. Years later, this diagnosis does not affect his outlook on life or his work at LIH Healthcare. Shawn is responsible for organizing the training for parents through LIH Olivia’s Place in Beijing and uses his excellent self-taught English skills to communicate with international clinicians working at and visiting LIH Olivia’s Place. Because of his own life experience, Shawn takes his job very seriously. He knows that the professional training of parents and high-quality rehabilitation services mean a lot to children with special needs and their families.

Nelson Chow, CEO of LIH Healthcare and a founder of LIH Olivia`s Place, attended the show with Shawn. Nelson’s daughter, Olivia, is the namesake for LIH Olivia’s Place. Olivia was born with Down syndrome. In order to help Olivia and all children with special needs in China obtain high quality pediatric services, Nelson started Olivia`s Place, where he introduced advanced international rehabilitation concepts in Shanghai and Beijing over the last five years. Following a merger with LIH, the LIH Olivia’s Place division has plans to provide pediatric therapy and developmental behavioral medical services in several cities across China, reaching many more children and families, and hopefully changing perceptions of people with special needs as the company expands its reach.

Shawn and Nelson have both devoted themselves to the development of rehabilitation services and are excited about the role that LIH Olivia’s Place will play in a bright future for children with special needs in China.

We are delighted to announce that Olivia’s Place and Eliott’s Corner have merged with one of China’s leading start-ups in the field of rehabilitation medicine, LIH ChangHe. When we founded Olivia’s Place in 2010 and Eliott’s Corner in 2011, we set a clear mission for our organization: To help the children of China maximize their potential through access to high-quality pediatric therapy.  We have made progress but as we’ve reached each milestone, it became evident that we needed to think more broadly and systemically about rehabilitative and developmental services for children in China. In short we realized we needed to be able to provide medical services to have the impact we were aiming for in our mission, which is true multidisciplinary services. This led us to envision a new “minimum platform” of several medical clinics and one specialized pediatric hospital as the minimum infrastructure we need to provide a comprehensive service platform to the families we serve, to train current and future clinicians, to work with universities and medical facilities to effect change in the rehabilitation and therapy fields, and to alter the landscape of opportunities for children with special needs.

We realized that we would need a partner to help us with this, and we were incredibly fortunate to find LIH ChangHe.  Prior to founding LIH in 2013, Dr. ChangSen Sun spent more than 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry, founding and leading one of China’s largest pharmaceutical companies, CITIC Pharmaceuticals, which later became Shanghai Pharmaceuticals and grew to 20 billion RMB in annual revenue. Following this success, he set his sights on making a positive impact in the development of healthcare services in China and the significant value to Chinese society that this could bring. He saw that rehabilitation medicine was the area in which China could benefit the most from development and founded LIH with the mission to bring high quality, international rehabilitation medicine and therapy to China.

I’m honored to serve now as one of the founders of LIH as well as the  President and CEO of our new combined organization and will continue in my role as the General Manager for the Shanghai clinic. Joining me will be the same clinical and administrative managers as before. Jacqueline Chen, mother to Eliott and our Beijing clinic co-founder, will be serving as the General Manager of our new Beijing LIH Olivia’s Place Pediatric Clinic, which is just opening on Jiuxianqiao Road. Elisabeth Ringrose, who has been with Olivia’s Place since the week we opened (over 5 years ago), will be serving as the Chief Therapy Officer for the combined organization.

Dr. Mease is an American board-certified pediatrician with more than 40 years of experience, and was Beijing United Family Hospital’s first CMO (Chief Medical Officer) and their head of pediatrics for many years. He is a proven leader in the development of medical services in China
