Olivia's Place Comments Off , , , , ,

“It exceeds far beyond my expectation; it is truly a training program that separates from most of the so called ‘training’ offered in the market these days.”

                                                      – Mr. Qian, training participant

The first Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Theory and Clinical Procedure Training Program came to a close on 30 July 2016 in Beijing. Instructed by a team of 14 highly distinguished trainers including Dr. Matthew Bartels, Chairman of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Professor Dayi Hu, Chairman of China Heart Federation, and Professor Leming Wang, Managing Director of Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, the 7-day program has received record attention from the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation professional community and a well-established reputation since the first day of the training.

Training participants were the 61 national finalists selected from 200 applicants to join the first pilot program. All of them are current clinicians such as physicians, nurses, and therapists, as well as hospital administrators. By the end of the training, qualified graduates were awarded with the joint graduation certificate to become certified trainers recognized by LIH Healthcare, China Heart Federation, Montefiore Medical Center, and Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine.

High-Ranking Trainer Brings Quality and Perfection

“Dr. Matthew Bartels attracted crowds of training participants after the class,” said Dr. Jie Zhang, Executive Vice President of Strategy & Corporate Development and Director of Clinical Liaison Leadership at LIH Healthcare. Cultural differences are commonly seen as a challenge for many western rehabilitation trainers in the larger context of China’s medical environment. Dr. Bartels is well aware of the challenge and capable of bringing effective learning to Chinese audiences by collaborating with prestigious healthcare organizations in the local market. “Dr. Bartels is highly engaged with Chinese training participants, and is also well-guided thanks to the successful collaboration with our professional training team”, remarked Dr. Zhang.

Training participants expressed their opinion of the course on the post-training satisfaction survey. The training sessions led by Dr. Bartels claimed 100.00% satisfaction rate from 51 out of 61 training participants on almost all teaching topics.

Strong Emphasis on Practical Experience

As the key architect and instructor of this training program, Dr. Bartels is well recognized in the world of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.  His teaching format stretched from lecture presentations to practical learning through case discussion and demonstration. Training participants gained a wealth of knowledge by having intense case discussion with their team members with a side selection of scenarios varying from hospital-based outpatient programs to home-based cardiac programs. In the session of Basic Exercise Physiology for Cardiac Rehabilitation, training participants were instructed by Dr. Bartels on the Incremental Shuttle Walk Test to strengthen their knowledge of aerobic training.

“It is actually a far better result than attending professional conferences overseas, the training has been a very effective learning experience in many different ways.”

-Ms. Liu, training participant

Due to the practical theme of the training, many participants found it extremely beneficial to have frequent opportunities to exchange ideas between instructors and fellow students, which consisted of experienced healthcare professionals from diverse disciplines, departments and backgrounds. Most of the practical experiences were closely integrated with clinical scenarios with specific and detailed explanations to demonstrate the mapping process of clinical reasoning and diagnosis.

The Future of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Training in China

Through examining the situation of limited highly qualified cardiopulmonary rehabilitation training resources in China, LIH Healthcare recognizes that the future of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation here will be realized through the delivery of high quality training services that offer participants the opportunity to gain professional skill and hone their expertise. LIH Healthcare believes in the value of investing in the development of China’s rehabilitation healthcare professionals and will continue its strong commitment to increase professionalism in the rehabilitation community in China.

It was a special day on 18 June 2016 for a group of nurses as they came to say goodbye to their classmates and teacher on the last day of a special training program, the first CARF-supported nursing rehabilitation training program in China. Smiling and holding their certificates, graduates captured the memory in a traditional group photo.

On 5 June 2016, LIH Healthcare reached a new milestone by presenting the first CARF-supported Nursing Rehabilitation Training program. “Professionally designed and implemented, this new training program was introduced in early May and received many inquiries and interest from the nursing community all over China, from the first day registration opened,” said Michelle Wang and Shirley Gao of the LIH Healthcare Training Division.

It was the first time for the nursing community in China to experience a full-length nursing course offered by Dr. Kristen Mauk, the recent Past President of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) of the United States. Many participants reflected on the final day that the training program provoked participants’ learning experience in various effective learning formats, such as case studies, group activities, skills demonstration, and real practice with equipment. Dr. Mauk also sees a great potential to deliver these types of training programs in the long run, to support more nursing professionals in China. “The collaboration with LIH has been great, they’ve been doing the ‘cutting edge’ things in China,” said Dr. Mauk.

“New, refreshing, and eye-opening learning experience”

With little emphasis on training for clinical teamwork, especially working in multi-disciplinary teams in their prior experience, training participants had the opportunity to immerse themselves in rich learning formats such as group discussion, case studies about collaboration, and problem solving and presenting solutions based on real case scenarios. Two additional guest instructors, Peter Drzymala (Professional Practice Lead, Occupational Therapy) and Marla Blazer (Professional Practice Lead, Physical Therapy) of LIH Kunming SkyCity Rehabilitation Hospital were invited to co-teach the class on a regular basis. Miss Zhao, one of the participants in the class, reflected that conversation with the guest therapists was an eye-opening experience and led her to believe in the importance of working with different disciplines to provide the best course of action for treating patients.

Throughout the course of the training program, the class was given tremendous opportunity to have hands-on learning experiences. Skill demonstration and practice of evidence-based rehabilitation techniques were heavily applied to strengthen participants’ learning experience. As one of the training participants recalled, “I’ve seen the mechanical lift all my life but have never been able to try it by myself, it never occurred to me that I should and now I know why I should.”

Was it a Success?

When the program came to a close, the LIH Healthcare Training Division immediately conducted a comprehensive evaluation and analysis. According to Michelle Wang, Training Supervisor, the learning format was the highest participant rated aspect of the program. Though experienced in more passive and traditional learning methods through their former education, almost ALL of the training participants showed an extremely high level of adaption and preference toward the new learning method introduced, even those that seemed to be out of their comfort zone. “Participants seemed very eager to jump out, ask questions, and experience practice regardless of the language barrier…,” recalled Ms. Wang. This successful learning experience resulted in 97% of participants claiming that they are willing to participate in more locally-offered training similar to this one provided by LIH in the future and would offer their assistance if the training was scheduled in their local area.

What comes next?

Since early this year, LIH Healthcare has developed and offered a series of groundbreaking training programs as the leading rehabilitation healthcare provider in China. With successful completion of the first CARF-supported Nursing Rehabilitation Training Course Series, LIH Healthcare will continue to focus on providing state-of-art training programs featuring more series on general competency learning and practices, advanced learning for senior nurses, and CARF Standards and Accreditation for Rehabilitation Nurse Leadership.
